Dr. Rachel, a dentist in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada had been financially contributing in the past to the best of her capacity in a small way to support children of the Cornwall area. After few months of the Tsunami tragedy on December 26th 2004, she initiated a charity auction and garden party to be held in her backyard garden to raise funds to assist victims of the Tsunami. Dr. Rachel promised if the fundraiser proved successful her intention was to make this an annual event where half of the contribution would be made to Canadian charities, mainly to benefit of children in the community, and the remainder would continue to go towards projects in overseas. Thanks to the compassion and generosity of the local communities of area, the event proved to be a huge success. Rachel’s kids helps several projects around the world through the Rachel’s Kids Development Fund. They raise money throughout the year, primarily from individual donors and through a fundraising auction held each year. Rachel’s Kids uses the money to support work with children who are victims of abuse, neglect and poverty. They support numerous projects both in Canada and overseas. In Sri Lanka Rachel’s Kids International Association in sponsoring several projects in Central, East, South and Western Provinces. In Wellapalliya Parish, Rachel’s kids International Association initiated a project in November 2009, to support 100 needy children, for their education. Number of children has been increased by 25 in 2012 and another 25 in 2013. All of them are between age 08 and 18. Presently, RKI is supporting 150 children. 71 under Palliyawatta Mt. Carmel church, 45 under St. Anthony church at Dickowita and 34 under St. Lazarus church at Hekitta. In every month, a monthly payment is issuing to their parents to be utilized as the fees of the supportive classes and a small amount is saving in their bank Savings Books, for their Tertiary education after the age of 18.
